Clarel: A Poem and Pilgrimage in the Holy Land (The Writings of Herman Melville: The Northwestern-Newberry Edition, Vol 12)
Published in Hardcover by Northwestern University Press (April, 1991)
Authors: Herman Melville, Harrison Hayford, and G. Thomas Tanselle
Average review score:

A Problematic But Great Classic
Since no one else has written about Clarel, I thought I'd be nice to Melville and congratulate him on his epic poem. Although the poetry itself isn't always brilliant, I felt that the general tone of melancholic spirituality was powerful. Essentially, to me, Clarel was about a young man questioning his world, and searching for meaning in a seemingly meaningless existence. The book parallels Melville's own travels in Jeruseleum, and with this work, we get a glimpse into Melville's interpretation of spirituality. Highly recommended, considering that it is overshadowed by that other Melville work (Moby Dick, of course!).

The Disposition of the Subject: Reading Adorno's Dialectic of Technology (Northwestern University Studies in Phenomenology & Existential Philosophy.)
Published in Paperback by Northwestern University Press (December, 1998)
Author: Eric L. Krakauer
Average review score:

brilliant
I came across this book entirely at random. Well, not quite. I was searching for other books by Jon Krakauer (climbing and extreme nature author). I ordered the Disposition of the Subject because of the title's reference to technology and Adorno's views on it, having already read Michael Zimmerman's Heidegger's Confrontation with Modernity. I do research on the phenomenology of technology, not as a philosopher but using philosophy as a resource to get above the "obviousness" and limitations of how many of the issues are discussed within information systems and computing. The Disposition of the Subject: etc. is a great book! If you are interested in a critique of technology, and of modernism as expressed in technology, from a very well read person who is also a clear and exciting writer, try this. I congratulate the author. This is his dissertation!

Dungeness Crabs and Blackberry Cobblers: The Northwest Heritage Cookbook (Knopf Cooks American Series)
Published in Hardcover by Knopf (November, 1991)
Authors: Janie Hibler, Jane Hibler, and Judith B. Jones
Average review score:

Intruiging cookbook with a bit of history
This book is a must for any cook who loves to read cookbooks in their spare time. All of the recipes are straight-forward, yet most of them are very unique combinations ie. walla-walla sweet onion jam, cheddar cheese soup with peppered bacon and ale. Each page also has a bit of Northwest history and accompanying photos, which are quite enjoyable. As Seattle-ite I can vouch that these recipes really do use locally available ingredients, but I think that cooks everywhere would enjoy and adapt these recipes. Only drawback is that pictures and text are black and white only.

Flyer's Recreation Guide - NW
Published in Paperback by Alta Research (July, 1997)
Author: Reed I. White
Average review score:

A catalog of dreams
Any general aviation pilot who flies in the west - or dreams of flying in the west - must have this book. It is a catalog of dreams and adventures, waiting for your plane, there for the taking. Reed White has selected and explored dozens of fly-in destinations in Montana, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Wyoming. They range from dirt Forest Service strips to paved full service airports, from rugged ridges to romantic getaways. Destinations listed offer something for every taste, from high country backpacking and camping to luxury resorts catering to virtually every need. In some cases the only accompdation is camping - you will be told what amenities if any are available. Near by hiking and fishing possibilities are always described. If ground transportation will be required, options are listed, ranging from hitchiking to rental cars. Other places described include listings of bed and breakfast inns, hotels and motels, restaurants etc., generally including rates charged. Local atractions are well covered. Reed White is an adventurer, and "Flyer's Recreation Guide" is in some ways a diary of his trips. But he bends over backwards to make sure any competent pilot with a suitable plane can follow in his footsteps. If you have a plane and a long weekend coming, this book will surely give you a lot of inspiration. Any pilot who claims to fly for fun and does not find this book fascinating might as well turn in his medical.

A vivid portrait of life in the NorthWest
This book features some of the most prominent authors born and bred in NorthWestern Ontario. I myself found the book intriguing, being from NW Ontario myself, because it references landmarks, sights, and sounds, common in Thunder Bay and surrounding areas. Nancy Bjorgo's story is without a doubt the one that stands out most in my mind in this incredible collection. I had no idea such talent resided in NorthWestern Ontario, the stories are powerful! If short fiction is your passion, pick this book up!
